About Dr. Axel Hoffer

Born in Czechoslovakia in 1935, Axel Hoffer moved with his family to America before his first birthday. Though he does not identify as a Holocaust survivor, he is connected with the Holocaust through his career as a psychoanalyst. For decades after World War II, Dr. Hoffer worked with the German government in their reparation efforts by meeting with around 100 Holocaust survivors and determining the degree to which the Holocaust was responsible for their mental disabilities. In this interview, Dr. Hoffer discusses his family story, his experiences in psychoanalyzing survivors, and his views on issues like the amount of blame the average German should face for the Holocaust.
